Overview of Macleod College Primary Campus

Macleod College Primary Campus is located in the lovely hamlet of Macleod, nestled among beautiful native landscaped grounds. Our school prides itself on maintaining strong connections between our students, parents and the local community. It is a nurturing environment where our students feel well supported by their teachers and education support staff. Our students are taught the Victorian Curriculum as mandated by the Education Department of Victoria.

We are fortunate to have students who come from many different backgrounds which enriches the cultural fabric of our school. We value student voice here and highly encourage both teachers and students alike to set high expectations and always greet new opportunities with curiosity.

Our school values of Achieve, Respect and Connect underpin all that we do in our school. These are not just words to us, but values that we live by daily and they are part of our conversations and behaviours guiding us to be passionate, kind and considerate in our interactions.

Foundation – Year 2

Students in the Early Years of their schooling at Macleod build strong foundations in their learning. They engage daily in our literacy program to build knowledge in phonics which gives them the tools to develop their vocabulary and strategies to use as they learn to read and write. They learn to write using different genres and understand the different purposes for writing. Students practice handwriting regularly, learning to form letters for legibility as well as developing their fine motor skills through hands-on tasks such as drawing, tracing, and cutting with scissors. Their daily reading program, which follows the workshop model, gives them exposure to an ever-widening range of texts to develop both their fluency and comprehension. In Mathematics, they are taught through hands-on experiences building their knowledge of numbers, basic operations, geometry and measurement. The students experience learning through inquiry in topics in History, Health, Geography and Well-being.

Year 3-4

In their middle years of Primary school, our students continue to build on their knowledge of phonics as they expand their vocabulary in reading and writing. They engage in a daily literacy program continuing to follow the workshop model and build their capacity to read and write texts involving more complex vocabulary and concepts. They begin to become independent readers and learn to analyse and become more discerning in their choices of texts. They increase their knowledge of different genres of writing and learn to communicate their ideas using their broader experience of the world. In Mathematics, they build their capacity to use the operations and apply them in a variety of ways to solve problems. Students use tools for measurement, to apply their knowledge to different situations and experience more real-life applications for using mathematics. They also experience learning through inquiry in topics across Health, History, Geography, Sustainability and Well-being.

Year 5-6

During the later years of primary school our focus is very much on consolidating prior learning as well as developing independence and capacity for the next part of our students’ educational journey. Through the literacy program, they are introduced to more detailed concepts in reading and writing to build their skills to analyse and explore deeper ideas in texts. They learn about the more subtle nuances and understand the use of inference as they use their own voice in their writing. In Mathematics, students consolidate their knowledge and use of operations and a wider variety of strategies that build their problem-solving capacities. They are exposed to more real-life applications of their mathematical knowledge and see more clearly the relevance of their learning. Their inquiry learning becomes more broad in terms of their knowledge of the world and equips them with experiences across such topics as world geography, levels of government, sustainable living and building capacity to navigate technology safely and responsibly. Our Year 5 and 6 students also have the opportunity to apply for student leadership roles and gain responsibility within their school.
