There is heaps of opportunity to get in touch with your creative side at Macleod College.
Art
In Art, you do painting, drawing and three dimensional art works.
Everyone takes Art for one semester in Year 7. You can choose it as an elective from Year 9 and take it all the way to Year 12.
Ceramics
In Ceramics, you make different models using clay which are glazed and fired. You can make almost anything including figurines, pots and sculptures.
Everyone takes Ceramics for one semester in Year 7. You can choose it as an elective at Years 9 and 10.
Dance
Dance is a special elective for one semester at Year 10. Both boys and girls enjoy the chance to choreograph dances for smaller and larger groups. Last year, students from Macleod College won the Northern Schools Dance competition.
Drama/Theatre Studies
Drama can bring out the performer within you. It helps to improve your confidence when standing up in front of an audience. Every student does Drama for one semester in Year 8 and it may be chosen as an elective from Years 9 to 12.
Media
Attention all movie lovers! Media is an elective that you can choose from Year 9 and right through to Year 12. At Years 9 and 10 students work in small groups to film and edit digital videos. Some students in the VCE like to make animation, web pages, games and magazines as well as videos.
Printmaking
This is a special elective that you can choose for one semester at Year 10. Printmaking is an extension of Art and would help you to broaden your skills. Students make artwork using lino cuts, etchings and special papers.
Sculpture
Sculpture is a special elective for one semester at Year 10. Here is your chance to make three dimensional artworks out of lots of different materials. You might try using plastics, wood or bus tickets – anything your imagination will allow.
Studio Arts/Photography
Everywhere you look today there are digital cameras. We have a Macintosh photography studio and you learn how to use software to present your photos. It can be chosen from Year 9 up to Year 12.
Visual Communication
You see advertising and other designs every day. Visual Communication helps to improve your drawing skills and helps you to make your own design work. Every student does Visual Communication for one semester at Year 8 and you can choose it as an elective from Years 9 through to Year 12.
Technology
The broad range of Technology subjects at Macleod includes Wood, Metal, Food and Textiles. In all these areas students design, create and produce a range of projects using the appropriate materials. Creativity and imagination are a vital part of this program.
Food
Food is a daily delight and students will create lovely aromas that waft down the hallway. Basic core skills in preparing and cooking food are covered for one semester in Year 8. It can then be chosen as an elective subject in year 9, 10, 11 and 12.
The specialist area of Patisserie (cakes and other such delights) can be chosen in Year 9. In year 10 International cooking covers a broad spectrum of foods.
This then follows onto year 11 and 12 with the subject Food and Technology.
Finally for those students who wish to experience the professional restaurant atmosphere can elect to do VET Hospitality in Year 11 &12.
Metal
This very engaging but noisy subject, Metal, is covered in Year 7 for a semester. The basic core skills, such as: welding, soldering, cutting and designing are completed, and then developed further in Year 9 and 10 Electives.
M. D. C (Materials, Design and Construction)
This subject is a combination of three Technology subjects (Wood, Metal and Textiles), enabling students to create projects using a wide variety of materials. Designing is an integral part of these projects and it can be chosen as an elective in Year 9 and 10.
Textiles
The sewing machine is an important part of modern technology and is the major part of the course covered for one semester in year 7. Basic core skills of construction, cutting, design and safety are covered.
These skills are developed further along with fashion illustration, design and construction in Year 9 and 10 under the subject Fashion. This then follows onto year 11 and 12 Design and Technology – Fashion.
Textiles can be continued in year 9 and 10 and embraces fabric decoration and embellishment with construction techniques as part of the course.
Wood
Each student in year 8 will do a semester of Wood. They will develop their core skills using basic joining, sanding, cutting and construction techniques. This subject continues in year 9 and 10 and follows onto Design and Technology – Wood, for year 11 and 12.
Special Activities
Art and Fashion Show
Each year, the school has an Art Show that is open to the whole community. The best art work from Prep to Year 10 is on display as well as all of the VCE work in Art, Media, Photography and Visual Communication. This is a chance for lots of other people to enjoy the art you have created.
Life Drawing
This is a special program for VCE Art students held over six weeks each year after school hours. Students learn to draw people using professional life models and it can really help to develop an understanding of the human form. This program is a very special opportunity that is really valued by our students.
Productions
Each year there is a major production. Sometimes it is a play and other years it is a musical. You can be part of the production as an actor, a musician, a dancer or you might like to be behind the scenes as a set builder or a lighting person.
