German at Macleod
Macleod College has a strong German program at both Primary and Secondary levels which offers students more than simply an opportunity to learn a language.
Primary students sing and dance their way through one German class a week, working with themes related to the Integrated Studies topic for the term.
Middle Years students enjoy a communicative approach to learning German with emphasis on success for all.
Later Years students hone their expertise in preparation for VCE achievement, in-country visits and career opportunities.
We run dynamic immersion language camps in Years 10 and 12 and have an active exchange and tours program with our German Sister School.
Recognised German excellence
Macleod College German program participants have regularly received awards.
German Exchange
Marlee Hawkins studied Yr 12 in 2006. She has received a Latrobe University grant to study overseas.
Here is what she says about the international study exchange:
Who would've thought that participating in a school based study tour across the world would change my life in so many ways? Not me, that's for sure. My name is Marlee Hawkins and taking part in the 2004 Germany Study Tour with Macleod College was, as cliché as it sounds, a life changing experience. Finishing Year 12, my experience influenced my decision to study at La Trobe University - just so that I could take the opportunity and apply for a University Exchange back to Germany. Successfully, I was accepted into my first preference at the Bundoora Campus - 'Tourism Management'. The exchange program itself at La Trobe is excellent, with the University providing me with a grant of $2,500 to go. Furthermore, I'm also applying for a scholarship to take me to Germany, with all expenses paid. The Germany Study Tour helped me develop as a person, become more independent, appreciate such beauty of a country, and make and improve friendships. Opportunities like this come once in a lifetime, but hopefully, I'll be lucky enough to experience it twice.
The LOTE Extension Program
“Darf ich eine Gummischlange haben, bitte?”
This additional after-school program is an innovative, interactive cross-aged LOTE learning experience designed to give all members of the school community the opportunity to learn or refresh German language competencies. Participants attend fortnightly sessions where the buzzing of German conversation and laughter is often heard. Countless practical activities, songs and cultural snap-shots provide a fast-paced, varied and much-enjoyed program, which supports classroom German learning and provides practical preparation for Study Tour participants.
