Transition and Orientation

• New Year 7 students come from over 30 different primary schools to Macleod College.
  Macleod usually enrols 160 - 170 Year 7 students.
  
  
• Our P-12 school enrolment consistently sits around 1050 and there are slightly more
  boys than girls (53% boys compared with 47% girls in 2007).
  
  
• Because students come into Year 7 from so many different primary schools we run an
  extensive orientation program.
  
  
• An extra orientation day for students who are the only one coming to Macleod
  from their school. This is held before the main orientation day so students can
  get to know some new friends for orientation day.
  
  
• Orientation day for all incoming Year 7 Students – students experience some
  of the classes that will be new to them in secondary school.
  
  
• Orientation day is a pupil free day for current students which enables new
  students to explore the whole school and use all facilities.
  
  
• An extensive orientation program for Year 7 students is held over the first two
  days of the new year. This enables students to learn more about students in
  their class, school layout, timetabling, and school rules and expectations.
  
  
• Early in term on there is a Year 7 house swimming carnival. This is a fun day
  and mixing with students in house groups is another way to make new
  friends.
  
  
• Year 7 sport training is held one afternoon per week. This enables more
  mixing with students outside of class groups.
  
  
• Year 7 locker bay is located close to Middle Years Team office. This gives quick
  and easy student access to teachers who are able to assist with problems.
  
  
• Year 7 classes are scheduled in one homeroom as much as possible.

The Year 7 transition has been terrific! … students from other primary schools … speak very positively about their teachers and subjects, the orientation process, the way in which the timetable, etc. has been organized, and the level of student support and strong sense of belonging at Macleod.
