
ESL Program
- At Macleod College International students study English in special English as a
Second Language (ESL) classes.
- Classes are very small with between 6 and 12 students and are taught by specially
trained teachers.
- Students study texts and topics that are suitable for their English level.
- The emphasis is on reading, writing, speaking and listening.
- Students work in pairs and small groups and have plenty of opportunity for speaking
and participating in class discussions.
- For the first 20 weeks after arrival students complete an intensive language program
at the Banksia Language Centre. The language centre is about 10 minutes drive from
Macleod College.
- Classes in the language centre have about 15 students and the students study English
- They learn the language associated with other subjects such as Maths, Science
Computer Studies and Art, to prepare them for studying subjects in Australian
classrooms.
- Students progress through the beginners, intermediate and advanced classes before
they are ready to come to Macleod College.
- While the students are studying at the language centre, the coordinator from
Macleod visits regularly to make sure the students are happy and making good
progress.
- Just before starting at Macleod the students will visit Macleod for a day to meet their
teachers and the other students in their class.
