Community Activities
Most, if not all of the activities in this program are student initiated, led and organised. Here is a sample…
SYN FM Radio
During Year 9 2006 spent a week on City Experience and visited SYN FM at RMIT. This is a radio station operated by students aimed at people around 25.
Since then a group have been pushing for Macleod to get their own radio back up and running and it has made a comeback this year. Students broadcast music and topics they want to talk about at lunch time in the canteen and hopefully other areas in the future.
One of our teachers organised SYN to come to the school and run training sessions for us on how to speak and how to use Audacity software for sound editing. Eventually we hope to travel to the city and broadcast in our own time slot on SYN FM 90.7.
ASPIRE – Skate Safe Workshop
Students have worked with Banyule Council to organise a skateboarding competition. They have contacted welfare coordinators of other schools and now have over 40 people participating and financial support from Banyule Council.
Students are hoping this will be the first of many such events.
World Vision
Macleod College has been supporting World Vision for many years. Students run the program, raising awareness by speaking to staff and students, running the 40 hour famine, an out of uniform day and selling Make Poverty History bracelets. Students conduct specific activities to raise awareness with Year 7 students.
This year the team has increased with more activities planned such as guest speakers, no furniture day for the 5/6’s, and the 40 hour famine weekend.
Ride, Walk, Skate and Scoot 2 School Day
A group of Year 8 students with a desire to help the environment organised this event as part of an English project. They presented their idea at assemblies, spoke with the assistant principals, designed promotional materials and organised bike security and competitions for participants on the day. Over 200 students took part.
A highlight was a family arriving with a father and his young son on a tag-along and his daughter riding beside him. The students felt very proud with a real sense of initiating and organising such a successful student community project.
Good Friday Appeal
Student groups traditionally organise themselves to door knock for the Good Friday Appeal. They say they end the day with heavy cans and tired legs, but that it’s a worthwhile experience. A Macleod tradition they hope will continue.
